Tucholke is a gorgeous writer. This is a must-have for avid fantasy readers who enjoy action-packed plots. She was covered in black silk, head to toe. Frey, Ovie, Juniper, and Runa are the Boneless Mercies - girls hired to kill quickly, quietly, and mercifully. How she ended up in a dark, sod-roofed house on the other side of the Black Spruce Forest, I didn't know.

Some of the places they stopped were so interesting I would have read a whole novel based on just one of the settings they came across. This book tries too hard, and tells too much rather than shows. Replete with descriptions of the natural world, details of Frey and her companions and a host of myths, sagas and rumours that take Vorseland far away from its rather obvious Norse analogue. And then forgotten about?

But the backstories were missing, the depth to the plot elements was missing — I just need more. I knew she was looking for food and clothing and weapons. The sun shone bright and brazen, and women had fire in their blood. Review: 4 Stars I stalked the release of this novel because I wanted a copy so bad. Have you read The Boneless Mercies?

If this was the first novel in a series it would be fine, however it is being advertised as a standalone. Tucholke is a gorgeous writer. Also, winter is coming and it is just as deadly as their enemies. The side arc is also an intriguing enough idea that it deserved more page time and could have actually been a book in its own right.

The descriptions for this novel have been described by others as beautiful, however what descriptions?

The Boneless Mercies Sneak Peek

We've found that while readers like to know what we think of a book they find additional reader reviews a massive help in deciding if it is the right book for them. I enjoyed the fact that it was focused on deep friendships rather than another unnecessary love interest, like so The Boneless Mercies book YA titles lately.

Women are the stars of this novel. Whilst many warriors have tried and failed to slay the beast, Frey and her companions are confident, after all they are Boneless Mercies, the unsung women warriors skilled in killing with The Boneless Mercies book and quiet, and if they do die, at least it will mean an honourable death in battle and a place in song and story.

This can both The Boneless Mercies book the book feel dreamlike, almost meditative, and yet at the same time deeply grounded in a very real time and place, making me care about tales of glory and deaths in The Boneless Mercies book whilst still giving me the idea that this was a world where people ate porridge for breakfast.

When she hears of an unstoppable monster ravaging a nearby town, Frey decides this is the Mercies' one chance out. I loved visiting the sea witches and seeing the really cool place in which they lived.

In fact, her actions may change the story arc of women everywhere. The way Tucholke presents her main characters and the friendship between them, as well as the continual emotional ware of the grim trade they practice and the isolation it causes is nothing short of exceptional.

Ovie handed me her knife — it was better made, sharper than mine. The concept of this novel is intriguing as someone who enjoyed Beowulf.

We tried not to get blood on our clothing. Her hair felt heavy on my palm, and it bore scents of the south. The silk clung to her curves and moved lightly through the air as if woven from soft summer breezes.

Similarly, whilst I was pleased that Tucholke for the most part avoids misandry and includes a lot of likable male characters; Trigve being a primary example, at the same time there are moments where it seemed Tucholke was making her pro female point at the expense of logic.

Vorseland is a thinly veiled Norse analogy, repleat with a mythological adaption as well. Without another book or two the full extent of this arc is never realized. Myrrh and frankincense. I wanted to touch it. The woman kept her eyes on mine until the end, never looking at the knife.

I ached to set her body on fire and let her soul drift up to Holhalla while her flesh turned to ash. The scents of pine, earth, and crisp cold are mentioned repeatedly in the novel.

It is a beautiful, haunting modern-day epic that stars a bold and resourceful sisterhood of heroines unafraid to claim agency.Feb 03,  · The Boneless Mercies are four hired assassins conducting mercy killings, each in their own fashion.
